Who is the SA007 - Asbestos Awareness Specification training for?

The SA007 - Asbestos Awareness training course will provide delegates with the essential foundation in relevant matters of asbestos awareness. It is suitable for delegates who already work in the construction or utilities industries or delegates that want to work within the construction or utilities industries.

What will you learn?

On successful completion of the SA007 - Asbestos Awareness course, delegates will be able to identify the properties and types of asbestos and its effect on human health, how to avoid the risks from asbestos and how to comply with the relevant legislation. In addition, they will be able to determine the presence of regulated asbestos, procedures to follow in the event of an emergency and the relevant regulation for personal decontamination. Delegates will be taught when the need for specialist advice should be sought when presented with complex issues.

Asbestos Awareness Course Learning Objectives:

  • Know the health hazards associated with asbestos
  • Know the types, uses and minimum legal requirements concerning asbestos
  • Understand prevention and control measures for asbestos
  • Know the typical hazards and risks associated with asbestos
  • Know how to deal with an asbestos emergency in the workplace

Course Content

You will be assessed, via your theory assessment, on the following criteria:

  • State common causes of work-related illness due to asbestos
  • State the potential hazards/risks to the health of workers exposed to asbestos
  • Identify three different types of asbestos
  • Identify three likely locations where asbestos may be found
  • Describe how asbestos enters the body and its likely consequences
  • Outline the legislative requirements relating to asbestos removal
  • State types of asbestos waste
  • Outline the health and safety issues and requirements relating to the safe removal of asbestos
  • Outline industry regulations which apply to the removal of materials containing asbestos
  • State the importance of following the correct procedures for the removal of asbestos
  • Outline the procedures for the packaging and disposal of asbestos waste
  • State how to store asbestos and contaminated materials
  • State why it is important to wait for a licensed asbestos contractor to remove asbestos
  • Outline prevention and control measures for reducing health risks associated with asbestos-containing materials
  • State types of personal protective equipment (PPE) used when dealing with hazardous asbestos materials
  • State how to review company paperwork to identify whether asbestos is present and what type it is
  • State the types of hazards/risks that may occur in the workplace linked with asbestos
  • State the importance of protective equipment when exposed or working with asbestos
  • State the purpose of risk assessments and method statements
  • Outline site safety procedures
  • Describe emergency procedures and where to seek advice on asbestos risks
  • Outline procedures for carrying out asbestos surveys
  • State how to report on the survey findings
  • Describe step by step how you would tackle an asbestos hazard
  • State how to carry out daily checks on Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)
  • Outline the correct wear and use of RPE and PPE in line with workplace and H&S requirements
  • Outline how to identify asbestos insulation board and asbestos cement and the importance of removing contaminated items without cutting or breaking them
  • Outline procedures for the use of decontamination units
  • State the importance of decontamination procedures

Assessment

The course includes a theory assessment which is composed of multiple-choice questions.

Course Details

On receiving payment for your SA007 - Asbestos Awareness course, an email with your ‘course joining instructions’ is sent to you.
This document includes the following details:

  • Your chosen course date
  • Course start time at your chosen venue
  • Address of your chosen venue, including a map screenshot
  • Details of what to do if you need any special requirements to complete the course

You need to bring photographic ID, such as a driving licence or passport with you.

Lunch is not included, so please provide your own.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is available to anyone over the age of 16 years old. There are no formal entry requirements and Smart Awards will not restrict access on the grounds of prior academic attainment, age, employment, geographic location or any other grounds. There are no barriers that restrict access or progression, thereby promoting equality. It is expected however, that learners will have a level of literacy adequate to cope with both the theory and practical assessments.

Assessment

The course includes a multiple-choice theory assessment.

Certification

This Smart Awards certificate is valid for 3 years, you will then need to complete the qualification again or attend a refresher course if available, to renew your qualification.
