Course Details

18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations

Covering comprehensively the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, City and Guilds 2382-12 is widely recognised throughout the electrical industry as the “must have” qualification. It is seen by many in the industry as a mandatory requirement showing that a thorough understanding of the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations has been achieved.

So whether you are involved in domestic, commercial or industrial electrical installations activities, City and Guilds 2382-12 qualification is widely regarded as a compulsory requirement for anyone involved in the electrical installation industry or is likely to be supervising those that are carrying out electrical installations.

Although City and Guilds states that there are no "pre entry requirements" to attend this course, we strongly recommend that you should have some prior knowledge of electrical theory, electrical principles and terminologies, together with a basic understanding of electrical installation circuits.

On completion of the 17th edition course, participants will understand:

  • How the numbering system works
  • How to navigate through the parts and chapters of BS7671:2008
  • The 18th edition wiring regulations and it’s relationship with other regulations
  • The scope and object and fundamental principles of the Regulations
  • The definitions and terms used in the Regulations
  • Assessment of general characteristics
  • Protection for safety
  • Selection and erection of equipment
  • Inspection and testing
  • Special installations or locations
  • The 16 Appendices

In addition, this City and Guilds 2382-12 18th edition course will also describe typical examples of how and where particular items within the 18th Edition of the wiring regulation may be applied.

Course Content

City & Guilds 2394-01 & 2395-01 Bundle

The City & Guilds 2395-01 level 3 award has been developed as a replacement for City and Guilds 2391-10, and comprehensively covers Periodic Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations.

City and Guilds 2394 is essentially aimed at practicing electricians who have not yet carried out any extensive inspection and testing since obtaining the 18th edition or perhaps since qualifying; or who require some update of their training before going on to other City & Guilds qualifications.

The qualification is also suitable for those with limited experience of initial verification and the inspection of electrical installations.

Although the course is principally designed for those who are already involved in the electrical industry, we suggest that those who are considering entering the industry, particularly from other engineering disciplines or who have been working in allied trades may find the course beneficial.

The 2394-01 award thoroughly prepares the delegate to undertake and understand the principles, practices and legislation for the initial verification of electrical installations

Course content is anticipated to cover some of these key areas:

  • Requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations

  • Safe inspection of electrical systems and equipment
  • Appropriate procedures for completing safe isolation
  • Health and Safety requirements specific to inspecting, testing and commissioning electrical installations and circuits
  • Selecting the appropriate items to be checked during the inspection process
  • The requirements for the inspection of electrical installations
  • Requirements specific for special installations and locations as identified in Part 7 of BS 7671
  • The IP Classification of equipment
  • Common earth fault loop paths
  • Methods for verifying protection
  • Requirements for determining fault current
  • Documentation

City & Guilds 2377-22 (Practical Testing)

The City & Guilds 2377-22 In Service Testing & Inspecting of Electrical Equipment is the benchmark qualification for anyone who intends to carry out the practical testing of electrical equipment (PAT Testing). This course will train delegates to carry out visual inspections as well as testing using test equipment.

City & Guilds 2377-32 (Management)

The City & Guilds 2377-32 In Service Testing & Inspection of Electrical Equipment is the ideal qualification for those who intend to carry out and manage registers and to oversee the inspection and testing of electrical equipment (PAT Testing).

City & Guilds 2377-22/32 (Combined)

If you not only carry out the inspection and testing on electrical equipment but also oversee testing, and carry out and manage registers, the combined course is ideal for you.

There are no pre-entry requirements to attend this course, however it is recommended to have some experience with electrical theory and terminology.

Part P Bundle

This bundle of qualifications will train you up to the requirements of the 17th edition of the wiring regulations and give you the practical skills to undertake initial verification. Part P scheme providers normally accept these qualifications to register. The course is made up of several City & Guilds Qualifications:

17th Edition - 2382-12

Covering comprehensively the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations, City and Guilds 2382-12 3 day course is widely recognised throughout the electrical industry as the “must have” qualification. It is seen by many in the industry as a mandatory requirement showing that a thorough understanding of the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations has been achieved.

Building Regulations - 2392-10

This 1 day course covers the building regulations requirements that apply specifically to domestic electrical work. The course looks specifically at domestic electrical work.

Verification and Testing - 2392-10

Over 4 days you will be taught how to carry out the process of initial verification, including carrying out functional testing and interpreting results. The course includes practical training sessions providing you with both the theory and practical application of testing skills.
