What is the Temporary Works Coordinator Refresher Course?

Temporary Works Coordinators have key responsibilities on construction sites, which may include planning and designing coordination, risk assessment, inspection and monitoring and training and guidance. The refresher course will update and refresh the knowledge and skills that you gained on the full Temporary Works Coordinator course, which is needed every 5 years.

You will be issued with a new CITB Temporary Works Coordinator certificate, which will be valid for another 5 years.

Who is the Temporary Works Coordinator Refresher Course for?

This course is for those who have completed the full CITB Temporary Works Coordinator course and want to renew their qualification. CITB qualifications do not have a grace period for renewal - refresher courses have to be taken before the original 5 year course date expires.

You will need to be able to read and write English to complete this course, and have previously completed the full Temporary Works Coordinator course.

Course Content

Temporary Works Coordinator Refresher Course Content

The course is split into the same 5 modules as the Temporary Works Coordinator course. However, as this is a refresher course, you will not cover the modules in as greater depth as the full course.

Module 1 - What are temporary works?

  • Describe the different types of temporary works and solutions to problems that temporary works offer building projects

Module 2 - The history of temporary works

  • How legislative framework was created for temporary works to promote a safety conscious process
  • The hazards, risks and causes of failure in temporary works
  • How to avoid failure of temporary works, focussing on the 4Cs

Module 3 - Who is involved in temporary works?

  • Describe the key roles and responsibilities for managing and implementing temporary works

Module 4 - Planning temporary Works

  • Management and control of design of temporary works
  • Key processes in planning temporary works
  • Appointing competent organisations, designers and contractors to manage the execution of temporary works
  • Risk classification and its impact on design and risk management

Module 5 - Managing the construction, erection and dismantling of temporary works

  • The key considerations for the coordination, supervision and checking of works on site during the construction, erection and dismantling of temporary works

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through out your course by the trainer that you understand the course material and that you are getting involved in activities and discussions. In addition, you will take a formal exam. The exam is 45 minutes long and consists of 18 multiple-choice questions and 4 written answer questions. The exam is open book, which means that you are allowed to use your course workbook (including any notes that you have written in it) for your exam.

Once you have booked your Temporary Works Coordinator Refresher Course:

On receiving payment for your Temporary Works Coordinator Refresher Course, an email with your ‘course joining instructions’ is sent to you.

This document includes the following details:

  • Your chosen course dates (this is a 2-day course)
  • Course start time at your chosen venue
  • Address of your chosen venue, including a map screenshot
  • Details of what to do if you need any special requirements to complete the course

You need to bring photographic ID, such as a driving licence or passport with you.

Lunch is not included, so please provide your own.

What happens if failing a CITB Assessment Paper?

In the event that delegates fail a CITB assessment paper and they qualify to do a re-sit assessment, the assessment paper can ONLY be taken on the same day.

Special considerations

CITB allow "reasonable adjustments" to support delegates. This includes assistance from an invigilator, however adequate time must be given for arrangements to be made before the course starts. If you request support, details will be passed on confidentially to the trainer of the course to assess what arrangements can be made.
