What is the Temporary Works Supervisor Course?

A Temporary Works Supervisor ensures the safe application and operation of temporary works on a construction site. Temporary Works Supervisors will oversee the installation, use and removal of temporary works, will conduct regular inspections and checks of the temporary works and provide guidance and instruction to workers involved in the temporary works.

By the end of the Temporary Works Supervisor course, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a Temporary Works Supervisor and you will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively oversee temporary works and contribute to a safe and successful construction project.

The CITB Temporary Works Supervisor Course is a 1-day course.

You will need to be able to read and write English to complete this course, there are no other formal requirements.

The course is split into 5 modules:

Module 1 - What are temporary works?

  • Describe the different types of temporary works and solutions to problems that temporary works offer building projects

Module 2 - The history of temporary works

  • How legislative framework was created for temporary works to promote a safety conscious process
  • The hazards, risks and causes of failure in temporary works
  • How to avoid failure of temporary works, focussing on the 4Cs

Module 3 - Who is involved in temporary works?

  • Describe the key roles and responsibilities for managing and implementing temporary works

Module 4 - Planning temporary Works

  • management and control of design of temporary works
  • How the Temporary Works Supervisor supports the Temporary Works Coordinator in the management and control of temporary works
  • Key processes that form a safe system of work
  • The importance of risk classification and the impact of this on design and risk management

Module 5 - Managing the construction, erection and dismantling of temporary works

  • The key considerations which will help a Temporary Works Supervisor support the Temporary Works Coordinator in the coordination, supervision and checking of works on site during the construction, erection and dismantling of temporary works

Assessment

You will be continually assessed through out your course by the trainer that you understand the course material and that you are getting involved in activities and discussions. In addition, you will take a formal exam. The exam is 45 minutes long and consists of 19 multiple-choice questions and 3 written answer questions. The exam is open book, which means that you are allowed to use your course workbook (including any notes that you have written in it) for your exam.

You need to bring photographic ID, such as a driving licence or passport with you.

Lunch is not included, so please provide your own.

Special considerations

CITB allow "reasonable adjustments" to support delegates. This includes assistance from an invigilator, however adequate time must be given for arrangements to be made before the course starts. If you request support, details will be passed on confidentially to the trainer of the course to assess what arrangements can be made.

Qualification and Certification

Once you have successfully completed the course they will be awarded with a CITB Site Safety Plus Certificate. This qualification must be renewed every 5 years to be kept up-to-date.

The Site Safety Plus Scheme provides the framework for the building, civil engineering and allied industries training and career development. The training follows industry standards and laws to make sure everyone knows the most important safety rules. The CITB Temporary Works Coordinator course is part of the Site Safety Plus Scheme.

What ID can I use for my CITB course?

When you attend a CITB Site Safety Plus course you need provide a form of photographic ID such as:

  • Passport: A valid passport of any nationality of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
  • Photo Card Driving Licence: A valid UK only driving licence with a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
  • Non UK Driving Licence: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
  • Work ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date (if applicable) and refer to the delegates present employer
  • EU Country ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date
  • CITB Scheme Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date. Acceptable CITB Scheme cards include CSCS, CPCS, CISRS
  • Student ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate, as well as year of study (e.g. 2018/2019 or expiration date and name of the institution of study) – must be no more than 6 months out of date
  • Citizen Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate and be no more than 6 months out of date
  • Proof of Age Card: Cards issued nationally in the UK by VALIDATE UK, bearing the PASS hologram bearing a photograph of the delegate
  • Young Scots Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date
  • British Armed Forces Card/Veterans Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate and for an employee or former employee of the Armed Forces only (not a dependent or spouse) – must be no more than 6 months out of date

If a delegate does not hold any of the above ID documents they will need to complete a waiver form.
