What is IPAF Training 2 Categories?
IPAF Training is for those who operate or work with mobile elevation working platforms (MEWPs). These include scissor lifts and boom lifts. MEWPs come under different categories, and training is tailored to the category that you are specialising in. The most popular categories are 3a & 3b.
As standard, our courses include 3a & 3b. If you'd like 1a or 1b included or training for individual categories, please get in touch.
- 1a – Static Vertical
- 1b – Static Boom
- 3a – Mobile Vertical
- 3b – Mobile Boom
We also offer the IPAF PAL+ training, an advanced qualification for experienced operators who work in industries where a MEWP is manoeuvred in challenging environments.
Who Should Attend IPAF Training 2 Categories?
If your job requires you to use MEWPs, the HSE says you should have attended a recognised operator training course and received a certificate, card or ‘license’, listing the categories of MEWP you are trained in.
Once you complete your IPAF training course you’ll receive your PAL card listing the categories of MEWP you are competent to operate.
PAL Card
The PAL Card is recognised worldwide across many industries as proof of platform operator training. Once you successfully complete your IPAF course, you'll receive your card listing the categories you are trained in. The PAL Card is now provided as standard through the ePAL App; physical cards are still available on request for a small fee.
- The PAL card is valid for 5 years

- Shows the categories of equipment you are trained to operate
- Security features such as a holographic logo and your photograph and signature
- The Smart PAL Card is marked by a wireless icon and has a chip embedded in it
