If you are working with internal copper cable, then you may want to add Unit 4 (copper cabling in an internal environment).

    Unit 1 - Basic Principles

    1 Day
This training course provides delegates with a fundamental understanding of cabling media and the basic principles that lie behind communications cabling and the basic workings of a network cabling system are explored. The applications that harness communications cabling in a modern cabling system are also examined, providing a valuable insight into communications cabling and other media. The course looks at the different types of copper cabling media including Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat6a and other high bandwidth copper cabling systems. In addition, the course also takes a look at optical fibre media, otherwise known as fibre optic cabling, to include a summary of single mode (sm) and multimode (mm). As well as common communications cabling definitions and current communications cabling standards, this course gives delegates a comprehensive guide to communications cabling.

    • Introduction to communications cabling
    • Health and Safety
    • The application of communications cabling in the networking environment
    • Current communications cabling terminology and standards
    • Communications cabling bandwidths and performance
    • Communications cabling transmission
    • Common communications cabling components
    • Communications cabling installation procedures and working practices

    Unit 2 - Fibre Internal

    4 Days
This training course provides delegates with the fundamental understanding of cabling media and the basic theories that lie behind communications cabling, including the principles of network cabling system.

The course also covers the extensive knowledge and installation skills that are needed to competently install, terminate and test fibre optic cabling for internal networks.

    • Theory of Light
    • Fibre optic transmission
    • The " how" and "why" fibre optic cabling is used in a LAN environment
    • How optical fibres work and the issues that can affect performance
    • Current standards
    • Terminologies and definitions
    • Identify fibre optic components and explain their uses
    • Work safely with optical fibres in an internal environment
    • Follow recommended installation procedures and working practices
    • Prepare fibre optic cabling for termination, connectorisation and splicing
    • Terminate fibre optic cabling by fitting connectors
    • Fibre optic cabling fusion splicing
    • Loss budget calculations
    • Carry out a OTDR test on fibre optic links
    • Interpreting test results
    • Fibre optic fault finding

    Unit 3 - Fibre External

    4 Days

This training course provides delegates with the fundamental understanding and underpinning knowledge of communications cabling media, the different types of cabling systems in use and the methodologies that are essential for a full understanding of communications cabling, including the basic principles of network cabling systems.

In addition, the course covers the extensive underpinning knowledge and the essential installation skills that are needed to competently install, terminate and test fibre optic cabling that are installed externally .

    • Theory of Light
    • Fibre optic transmission
    • The " how" and "why" fibre optic cabling is used in a datacomms environment
    • How optical fibres work and the issues that can affect performance
    • Current standards
    • Terminologies

    • Work safely with optical fibres in an external environment
    • Follow recommended installation procedures and working practices
    • Prepare fibre optic cabling for termination, and splicing
    • Terminate fibre optic cabling by splicing onto "pigtails"
    • Dressing fibre optic cabling into a patch panel
    • Carry out fibre optic cable "dressing into a closure" procedure
    • Loss budget calculations
    • Test fibre optic installation using the OTDR.
    • Interpret OTDR test results and complete client documentation

    Special Considerations

The delegates can have questions read to them. They can also provide answers verbally which can be written down for them however it has to be recorded on a voice recorder for IQA purposes (HR Training are the only people that do this)
