Overview

The CPCS Telescopic Handler (A17) category of plant training and testing teaches the relevant operational and safety requirements applicable to telescopic handlers. Earning you your red CPCS trained operator card.

What CPCS Course Do You Need?

Most delegates looking for a CPCS course have an idea of the category they need, usually it is a requirements of the work they are undertaking or about to undertake.
If you have any doubts about the qualification/category you need please speak with your manager or the company you are about to begin work with, we cannot specify the category you need.

Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS)

The CPCS covers a large range of plant categories, the Construction Plant Competence Scheme uses both practical and written assessments to ensure you are competent in your chosen category. These assessments are taken at the end of your training.

  1. Pass your Health, Safety and Environment Test (click here to book your test through the CITB).
  2. Attend training days in your chosen category.
  3. At the end of your training, complete your category assessments (assessment fee's are included in your course price).
  4. Receive your Trained Operator (red) or Competent Operator (blue) card.

Red or Blue Card

You can start working within your chosen category once you have earned the Red (trained operator) card. The card confirms the core skills, knowledge and understanding required, however a newly trained operator will still require full and close supervision until deemed sufficiently experienced to without supervision.

Red Card
Each category on your red card will have it's own 2 year expiry date the card itself has no expiry. During the 2 years you can upgrade to the Blue (competent operator) card.
Your Red card is not renewable, this is to ensure progression towards your competent card.

Blue Card
To earn your Blue card you must meet the requirements of the Red plus complete an NVQ or SVQ in your category.
Your Blue card will last for 5 years, each category on the card will have the expiry of the card itself. You will have to renew your card within the 5 years.

Costs

Novice to Trained Operator (including assessment fee's) from £895+vat per person.
Experienced to Trained Operator (including assessment fee's) from £595+vat per person.
NVQ upgrade from Red to Blue (competent) card from £750+vat per person.

Grants

This course may be eligible for 1 or more CITB grants.

CPCS technical test theory grant
You can claim this grant when your employees pass the theory part of their CPCS technical test (£60 per test).

CPCS blue card upgrade grant
You can claim this grant when your employee gains a new plant unit of an NVQ or SVQ. The unit must be a category being added to their blue card (£300 per category).

Course Content

  • The nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibility as a plant operator.
  • Name and explain the purpose of principle components, the basic construction, controls and terminology.
  • Conform with the manufacturer's requirements as per the operator's handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation.
  • Undertake all pre-use checks.
  • Explain need and function of appropriate documentation.
  • Configure and ready for travel (site and highway).
  • Travel over level surfaces with and without loads and, where applicable, on rough, undulating ground and inclines.
  • Manoeuvre in confined spaces with and without loads.
  • Follow given signals and instructions when travelling and manoeuvring with and without loads.
  • Configure and ready for all lifting, loading and transferring duties.
  • Attach and remove attachments, including forks, for the movement of unit loads.
  • Attach and remove attachments and accessories for the movement of suspended loads.
  • Explain actions required for proximity hazards, including underground and overground services.
  • Follow given signals and instructions during work activities.
  • Lift and remove various loads up to full extension and working height of the tele-handler.
  • Transfer and place loads accurately at given locations.
  • Place and remove loads from a vehicle.
  • Maintain safe working situations.
  • Determine the requirements for the lifting and transferring of suspended loads.
  • Establish and comply with given signals and instructions.
  • Lift various suspended loads from given locations.
  • Travel with and place various suspended loads at given locations.
  • Minimise the swinging of loads during travel.
  • List different types of lifting accessories and attachments compatible with suspended loads and telescopic handlers.
  • Explain the correct and incorrect methods for attaching suspended loads to the machine.
  • Explain how stability is affected by travelling with both a raised boom and a suspended load.
  • Explain visibility issues and restrictions with suspended loads.
  • Place loads out of sight of the operator.
  • Maintain safe working situations.
  • Maintain safe and tidy working areas.
  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures.
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting.

Course Details

The CPCS Telescopic Handler (A17) course is available to individuals and groups at centres Nationwide. You can choose:

  • To attend your training only, and earn an in-house certificate.
  • Attend the assessments only, for those with experience looking to gain their card.
  • Attend both the training and CPCS assessments to earn your Red card, perfect for novices.
  • Attend your training, CPCS assessments and NVQ/SVQ to earn your Blue card.

Prerequisites

To attend the Telescopic Handler course you must have taken and passed your Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
We offer courses aimed at both novice and experienced operators. Your competency in this respect is self assessed.

Novice
The novice course is run over more days and includes more training to prepare you for your assessments.

Experienced
The experienced course will be shorter with less/no training and assumes you have experience within the category.

Course FAQs for CPCS Telescopic Handler (A17)

My red card is about to expire, what do I do?

As the red card isn’t renewable, you should upgrade to the blue card. You can do this in 2 steps:

  1. You need to have passed the Health, Safety and Environment test (more info) within the last 2 years.
  2. Complete the relevant NVQ for your category.

Once complete, you can apply for your blue card.

How long does my CPCS card last for?

Red Trained Operator Card
Each category on your red card will have it’s own 2 year expiry date the card itself has no expiry. During the 2 years you can upgrade to the Blue (competent operator) card.

Your Red card is not renewable, this is to ensure progression towards your competent card. However if you register for an NVQ within the grace period (normally 12 months after expiry) you can apply for a grace period.

Blue Competent Operator Card
To earn your Blue card you must meet the requirements of the Red plus complete an NVQ or SVQ in your category.
Your Blue card will last for 5 years, each category on the card will have the expiry of the card itself. You will have to renew your card within the 5 years.

If you have kept a logbook of 300 hours of work on in your category you can renew with a simple test. If not you can renew through practical tests and on site assessments.

Do I need anything to attend this course?

You’ll need to have completed the Health, Safety and Environment test (info from CITB here) within the last 2 years.

Also to attend the course you will need to bring your own PPE, for a full list or more details on the PPE required just ask the PSS training team.
