Can Game Based Learning Improve Health & Safety Standards?

Posted on written by Marvin

"A few weeks ago we looked at how artificial intelligence is proving to be an innovative way of improving health and safety standards and this week we want to explore the world of game based learning.

Health and safety can often be seen as a tedious subject, however it’s part of a mandatory procedure. But what if there was a way to make it fun? A way to make it engaging and interactive? Well, when there’s a will, there’s a way! We look at how game based learning can improve safety standards by offering an interactive alternative.

Can Game Based Learning Improve Health & Safety Standards?

We’re always seeking for new ways to improve the learning for health and safety – making it fun and much more interactive. Even though safety standards are improving and there has been a lot of progress in the past few decades, there is still some way to go, to ensure the learning procedure is being implemented as effectively as possible.

So, how does game based learning work?

Game Based Learning Can Enhance a Tedious Topic

We all know health and safety training can be a bit tedious – but it has to be done! But what if there was a way to make it fun? Such as implementing games within learning? Well, there is a way of such. With game based learning, delegates can enhance their knowledge and skills in a fun and interactive environment. Game based learning can also offer an effective accompaniment to the more traditional classroom.

The need to build upon existing training methods within the health and safety sector has allowed new approaches to be introduced. The EEF – the UK manufacturing and engineering and a leading provider of business support, has created a new tool to improve health and safety in the workplace – making learning much more fun and interactive. We look at how game based learning can improve safety standards by offering an interactive alternative.

So What Is The New Health & Safety ‘Game’ By EFF

The new game based tool has been designed to allow workers to manage health and safety risks. It creates a simulated and safe environment where employees can learn how to deal with safety issues and identify key hazards that they may encounter on a daily basis.

The game comes in 3 different options – from a ready-made game, to a completely bespoke simulation which has been custom designed specifically with your working environment in mind.

The game has already been used by Fujitsu to great effect and in the future it is hoped that this can be utilised by different departments within the organisation, in an attempt to create better risk assessments.

Using Game Tools To Improve Health & Safety Standards

For many people health and safety can be quite boring and can sometimes make you feel as though you are going through the motions, rather than actually learning of something with high importance. However, with solid safety training and offering alternative ways for learners to digest information, it is most likely to improve the learning for delegates. With that being said, I think it’s fair to say improved learning can result to a safer workplace!

By allowing workers to learn from their errors in a safe simulation, lessens the chances of a health and safety failure in a real world setting. Game tools are advancing at a fast rate and with the progression of virtual reality training, they should become even more effective in increasing safety knowledge in all industries.
