Project Skills Solutions Blog - 5 benefits of a well trained workforce

A well trained workforce are the backbone of numerous successful businesses. They serve as the driving force behind innovation, customer satisfaction, and consistent growth. Investing in employee development isn’t just a perk – it’s a strategic move that positions your business at the forefront of industry standards and best practices. By neglecting this critical aspect, companies risk stagnation and losing their competitive edge. Prioritise training and watch as your organization soars to new heights, leaving no room for complacency.

Having staff that are well trained in their roles can improve a business’s performance in many ways. Here are our top 5:

Employee Morale

Staff satisfaction is very important within a company. If individuals are satisfied with their role, then morale is increased, which in turn, increases work output.

Training helps to:

  • make people more confident in their role, which directly improves morale.
  • Skill development and mastery: when you learn new skills and/or master new ones we experience a sense of achievement, boosting self-esteem and job satisfaction.
  • Training often provides clarity about job roles, expectations, and the bigger picture of an organisation’s structure and mission. When employees understand their role, it’s significance and importance, employees are more likely to feel satisfied within their role and engaged.
  • Continuous training means that employees are adapting to the latest industry standards, technologies, or practices.
  • Fostering a learning culture within your organisation has the benefit that personal growth is aligned with the growth of the organisation, leading to a higher degree of job satisfaction for employees.
  • Constructive feedback and recognition often comes with training courses. Constructive feedback given appropriately provides guidance  on improvements and what is working well and also offers a roadmap for personal and professional development. Constructive feedback also builds trust, as employees will see that supervisors and managers are invested in their growth and not just looking to criticise.

Maintaining morale requires training staff equally. When the organisation trains staff equally, it ensures fairness and inclusivity for everyone.

Productivity

Better training means better processes. A well trained workforce mean tasks can be performed much faster if employees know what they’re doing and the quality of work will also improve. Mistakes are far less likely to occur if individuals have the best training for the job that they do. There is also a chance that particularly well trained staff will be able to see where improvements could be made.

Training sessions can introduce employees to new tools, technology and software. If something is new, it usually comes with the benefit of being faster and therefore streamlining processes. Once training has been completed and employees have settled into using it, increased productivity will follow.

Most training sessions will involve some aspect of critical thinking or problem-solving. When employees develop and apply these skills in the workplace, they tackle challenges with a “solutions not problems” approach and act more proactively. Additionally, training courses often highlight and enhance skills in creative thinking and innovation. Innovative employees may feel encouraged to bring new methods and ideas that improve and enhance work processes to the table, further increase productivity.

Increasing Safety Consciousness

For many businesses, staff safety is, and should be the number one priority. Employees lacking in knowledge and skill are more likely to have an accident in the workplace. Training helps to remove this. Many accidents happen because staff do not know how to properly use or store a piece of equipment, so it’s essential they do.

The IOSH Working Safely Course is an entry level course for anyone in any industry and covers the essentials of health and safety for employees. There is also an IOSH Managing Safely Course, aimed at managers and supervisors. This course will support them in understanding their duties and responsibilities when it comes to health and safety.

The construction industry in the UK mainly recognise CITB health and safety courses as the qualifications to have when working on construction sites. CITB’s range of courses is often referred to as ‘Site Safety Plus’. The scheme includes entry-level health and safety awareness courses to site manager skills.

A Well Trained Workforce Feels Valued

Well trained employees can become an asset to a business. They add value to the company as a whole, and make internal promotion easier. A well-trained workforce is not merely a reflection of an organisation’s commitment to excellence within the field, but it’s also a testament to its dedication to its employees’ growth and well-being. When a company invests in training, it shows employees that it values them, recognizes their skills, and commits resources for their learning and skill mastery. As employees go through regular training sessions, they believe the company acknowledges their potential and contributions. Feeling valued in this way boosts their sense of belonging and loyalty, which in turn raises morale and job satisfaction An empowered and valued employee, in turn, becomes a passionate advocate, driving towards success both personally and for the business.

Gaining Independence and Working as a Team

A well trained workforce often exhibit a good blend of independence and teamwork, both of which are essential for a thriving work environment.

Employees collaborating

Training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to confidently tackle tasks, reducing their need for constant supervision or guidance. This newfound independence allows them to make informed decisions and approach challenges proactively. At the same time, training often emphasises the value of working together, teaching employees how to communicate effectively, delegate responsibilities, and utilise each others’ strengths when presented with challenges. As a result, while they gain the capability to work independently, whilst also recognising the power of a collective effort. On top of this, when staff know exactly what to do and how to do it, you need fewer supervisors. You can trust a fully trained workforce to operate independently without making mistakes or slowing down processes.

I do agree with you when you said that lack of knowledge and training can lead to accidents and injuries and so having the staff trained to approach various situations will prove to be beneficial to the company. I will be sure to mention this to my boss since he is also planning to start a construction firm. I thought it will be nice if people were trained before they start working, and this proved that I’m right. Thanks!
